Engineer jailed for GHS150,000 tipper truck fraud.
Accra, July 5 (GNA) – A court in Accra has sentenced a 43-year-old agricultural engineer to three years in prison with hard labour for defrauding a businessman of GHS150,000.
The man, Abraham Asudam, was found guilty of taking the money under false pretenses. He had claimed he could help the businessman, Mr. George Asudam, buy a tipper truck from Belgium.
Even though Abraham first said he was not guilty, the court, led by Judge Isaac Addo, found enough evidence to prove otherwise. The judge noted that Abraham was a first-time offender and had already spent some time in police custody while waiting for his sentence.
The court had given him time to pay back part of the money — GHS30,000 — but he failed to do so even after several chances. The judge said the sentence should serve as a warning to others.
Abraham was also ordered to pay the remaining GHS30,000 to the businessman.
According to the police, led by ASP Seth Frimpong, Abraham gave the businessman fake documents and a false payment receipt. He even provided a fake truck chassis number and said the truck would arrive in a month. Later, he stopped answering calls and disappeared until the police arrested him.
Investigations showed that Abraham was not a licensed vehicle dealer, and all his papers were fake. The police were able to recover GHS20,000 from him, which is being kept as evidence.
