Accra, Ghana – June 27, 2025

In a recent address, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang emphasized the urgent need for enhanced support for the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) as it navigates the increasingly complex landscape of drug-related challenges in Ghana. The Vice President’s remarks came during a stakeholder engagement forum held at the International Conference Centre in Accra, aimed at fostering collaboration among government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners.

Professor Opoku Agyemang highlighted that the fight against narcotics trafficking and abuse is not only a law enforcement issue but also a public health concern that requires a multifaceted approach. "As we face evolving threats from sophisticated drug syndicates and new psychoactive substances, it is imperative that we bolster the capacity of NACOC to effectively respond tothese challenges," she stated.

The Vice President underscored the importance of investing in training and resources for NACOC personnel, emphasizing that well-equipped and knowledgeable officers are crucial to combating drug trafficking networks. She also called for the establishment of robust partnerships with international law enforcement agencies to share intelligence and best practices.

During her address, Professor Opoku Agyemang acknowledged the significant strides made by NACOC in recent years, including successful operations that have led to the seizure of large quantities of illegal drugs. However, she cautioned that complacency could undermine these achievements. "We must remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts. The drug trade is ever-evolving, and we must adapt our strategies accordingly," she urged.

The forum brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Interior, the Ghana Police Service, health professionals, and non-governmental organizations. Participants engaged in discussions about innovative approaches to drug prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, highlighting the need for community involvement in addressing substance abuse.

In her closing remarks, Vice President Opoku Agyemang reiterated the government's commitment to supporting NACOC in its mandate. "Together, we can create a safer and healthier environment for all Ghanaians. It is our collective responsibility to combat the scourge of narcotics and protect our youth from its devastating effects," she concluded.

The engagement forum marks a significant step in Ghana's ongoing efforts to strengthen its response to drug-related issues. With calls for increased collaboration and support for NACOC, stakeholders are hopeful that these initiatives will lead to more effective strategies in tackling narcotics challenges in the country.

As Ghana continues to confront the realities of drug trafficking and abuse, the role of NACOC will be pivotal in safeguarding the nation's future and ensuring that communities remain resilient against the threats posed by narcotics.
