ANALYSIS

Ya-NA PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR MAHAMA'S GOVERNMENT

1. Does the image accurately represent the headline’s message?

Yes. The image shows the Ya-Na (a traditional king in northern Ghana) dressed in regal attire, surrounded by others in traditional clothing. This aligns well with the headline about the Ya-Na pledging support for Mahama’s government, visually affirming the involvement of a traditional leader in politics.

2. What emotions does the image evoke?

Respect, tradition, and unity. The image evokes a sense of cultural pride and political symbolism. There’s a peaceful and cordial atmosphere that suggests cooperation and endorsement rather than conflict or controversy.

3. Is the image manipulated or biased?

No apparent manipulation. The photo seems authentic and not digitally altered. However, framing a traditional leader in an entirely positive light without opposing perspectives might show editorial bias depending on the outlet's political leanings.

4. How does composition affect storytelling?

Strong composition. The Ya-Na is centered and clearly the focal point, emphasizing his authority and importance. The presence of others in traditional wear and the warm lighting enhance the ceremonial tone and suggest unity and solemn support.

5. Does the image add depth to the story or simply reinforce the headline?

It adds depth. Beyond just reinforcing the headline, the image visually communicates the cultural weight and significance of the Ya-Na’s support, illustrating that this is not just political but also socially symbolic.

6. Would a different image change the reader’s perception of the news?

Yes. An image of just Mahama or a political setting without the Ya-Na would shift the focus to the political leader alone. This specific image highlights traditional legitimacy and regional influence, deepening the impact.

7. How does the image compare to others covering the same story?

It likely stands out. Many political stories focus on politicians or rallies. Including a respected traditional leader in regalia brings a unique cultural angle that distinguishes the coverage from more typical political imagery.

8. Is the image culturally or politically significant?

Absolutely. The Ya-Na is a major cultural figure, especially in the Dagbon traditional area. His visible support has political weight. The image reflects societal values around chieftaincy, tradition, and their intersection with governance.

Global Child Labour Crisis Persists: 138 Million Children Affected in 2024 – ILO, UNICEF

By Eria Amenya

Hohoe (V/R) – Despite years of global advocacy and intervention, child labour remains a persistent crisis. According to new figures released by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF, an estimated 138 million children were engaged in child labour in 2024 alone.

Startlingly, around 54 million of these children were involved in hazardous work — jobs that endanger their health, safety, and development.

While the data reflects some progress — with a reduction of over 20 million child labourers since 2020 — the world remains far from its goal of eliminating child labour by 2025.

The findings also underscore a troubling increase in child labour between 2016 and 2020, which temporarily reversed previous gains. Although there has been improvement since then, global efforts continue to fall short of the mark.

In response, the ILO and UNICEF are calling on world leaders, policymakers, and communities to intensify their actions to protect vulnerable children, ensuring access to education and social protection systems.

The data is a wake-up call. We cannot afford to be complacent when millions of children are still denied their childhood," the organizations said in a joint statement.
